Red Banana Plant (Sevvazhai) – Live Sapling from Dream Nursery

Red Banana, known as Sevvazhai in Tamil and Chenkadali in Malayalam, is the reddish-purple skinned banana with creamy, slightly sweeter flesh than common table varieties. It is valued in traditional South Indian diets and fetches a consistently higher price than ordinary bananas. Dream Nursery supplies healthy Red Banana saplings grown at our nursery in Perambai, Puducherry.

Why grow Red Banana

  • Premium price – sells well above regular banana varieties in local and city markets.
  • Bunch yield – typically 15–25 kg per bunch with good management.
  • Harvest window – first bunch in roughly 14–16 months from planting.
  • Ornamental value – striking reddish pseudostem and fruit, popular in home gardens.

Growing guide

  • Sunlight: full sun, minimum 6 hours daily.
  • Spacing: 7 x 7 ft in the field; a large grow bag or 24-inch pot for terrace planting.
  • Soil: deep, fertile, well-drained loam with plenty of organic matter.
  • Water: steady moisture without waterlogging; drip irrigation is ideal.
  • Feeding: FYM at planting, then regular nitrogen and potash through the cycle.
  • Care: Red Banana takes longer to mature than other varieties, so keep feeding consistent, desucker regularly and prop the plant once the bunch forms.
