Grafted Mango Plant Care: First-Year Guide for Tamil Nadu & Puducherry Gardens

The northeast monsoon is the best time of year to plant a grafted mango sapling in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The soil stays moist, the sun is gentler, and a young plant has several cool months to grow new roots before the heat of March–May arrives. If you have just bought a mango plant, or are planning to, this guide covers what to do in its first year so it grows into a strong, healthy tree.

1. Pick a sunny, well-drained spot

Mango trees love sun. Choose a place that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Just as important is drainage: during heavy October–December rain, water should never stand around the base of the plant. If your garden tends to flood, plant on a slightly raised mound or choose the highest corner of the plot. Leave enough room around the spot, because a mango tree grows wide over the years.

2. Prepare the pit before planting

Dig a pit about 2 ft wide and 2 ft deep a few days before planting. Mix the dug-out soil with well-rotted cow dung manure or compost. In heavy clay soil, adding some red soil and a little sand helps water drain faster. Avoid putting fresh (raw) manure or chemical fertiliser directly into the pit, as it can burn young roots.

3. Planting the grafted sapling

  • Water the sapling in its nursery pot an hour before planting.
  • Gently remove the pot or bag without breaking the soil ball around the roots.
  • Place it in the pit so the top of the soil ball sits level with the ground.
  • Keep the graft joint above the soil. The graft joint is the slightly swollen point on the stem where the variety was joined to the rootstock. Burying it can cause rot.
  • Fill in the soil, press lightly with your hands, and water well.
  • Tie the plant loosely to a stick so monsoon winds do not rock it.

4. Watering through the first year

During the monsoon, rain often does the job for you. Check the soil with your finger: if it is wet, do not water. In dry spells between rains, water deeply once or twice a week. From January onwards, as the weather warms up, water more regularly, and in April–May a young plant may need water every two or three days. A layer of dry leaves or straw (mulch) around the base, kept a little away from the stem, keeps the soil cool and moist.

5. Remove shoots below the graft

Sometimes new shoots grow from the rootstock, below the graft joint. These will not give you the variety you bought, and they take energy from the plant. Snip them off as soon as you see them. Also check the grafting tape, if any is still on the stem; once the joint has healed, remove it so it does not cut into the growing stem.

6. Pinch off early flowers

Many grafted mango plants flower in their first or second year. It is tempting to let them fruit, but for the first 2–3 years it is better to pinch off the flower bunches. This lets the plant put its energy into roots, branches and leaves, so it can carry a much bigger crop later.

7. Feeding and monsoon pest care

Once the plant shows new leaves (usually a few weeks after planting), add a handful or two of compost or well-rotted manure around the base every 2–3 months and water it in. Humid monsoon weather can bring leaf spots and caterpillars on tender new leaves. Look at your plant every few days, remove badly affected leaves, and use a neem oil spray if pests appear.

Can I grow mango in a pot?

Yes, for a terrace, but a mango needs a large container (a big drum or wide grow bag) with drainage holes and a loose, rich mix. Harvests from a container are usually smaller than from a tree in the ground, and the plant will need more regular watering and feeding.

Which variety should I choose?

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry home gardeners commonly grow Banganapalli, Alphonso, Totapuri and Mallika. Not sure which one? Try our 5 Variety Grafted Mango Plants Combo, or pick a single favourite like the Banganapalli Mango Plant. You can see every variety in our Mango Plants collection.
