Adenium, or desert rose, is one of the most loved flowering plants on terraces across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Its swollen trunk and bright pink, red and white flowers make it a favourite for gifting and for sunny balconies. But adenium is a plant built for dry, hot weather. When the northeast monsoon arrives in October and the skies stay grey for days, many potted adeniums suffer from soft stems, yellow leaves and root rot. The good news is that a few simple changes will carry your plant safely through the rainy months.
Why the monsoon is hard on adenium
Adenium stores water in its thick trunk (the caudex) and roots. In summer this helps it survive heat and missed waterings. In the monsoon, the same habit becomes a risk: if the soil stays wet for long periods and there is little sunshine to dry it out, the roots and the base of the stem can start to rot. Cloudy weather also slows growth, so the plant uses far less water than it did in May or June.
1. Check your pot and drainage first
The single most important thing is drainage. Water must flow out of the pot within seconds of watering or rain. Use a pot with several drainage holes and never let it stand in a saucer of water during the monsoon. A tall, narrow pot such as our Tall 6 Inch Round Pot for Succulents, Cactus & Adenium works well, as it lets excess water drain away from the roots quickly.
If your adenium is in a pot without holes, or in a deep decorative container with no outlet, move it to a proper grower pot before the heavy rains start.
2. Use a fast-draining soil mix
Heavy garden soil holds too much water for adenium. A loose, gritty mix is safer. Many growers in South India use a mix of red soil, coarse sand and a smaller portion of cocopeat or compost. Red soil gives structure, sand opens up the mix, and a little cocopeat holds just enough moisture without becoming soggy. Our Red Soil 5 kg pack is a good base for this kind of mix.
Avoid repotting during continuous rain. If the soil is clearly waterlogged, wait for a dry spell, then gently move the plant into fresh, dry mix.
3. Water much less, and only when dry
During the monsoon, forget your summer watering routine. Push a finger about two inches into the soil. If it feels damp, do not water. On rainy weeks your adenium may need no watering at all. Over-watering in cool, cloudy weather is the most common reason adeniums are lost at this time of year.
4. Give shelter from continuous rain
Adenium still needs as much light as possible, so do not move it into a dark room. Instead, place it where it gets bright light but is protected from steady rain, such as under a sunshade, a balcony overhang or a clear roof sheet on the terrace. When the sun comes out between showers, move it back into full sun.
5. Watch for early warning signs
- Yellow leaves dropping: some leaf drop is normal in cool, cloudy weather. Reduce watering and keep the plant in good light.
- Soft, wrinkled or dark trunk: this can be a sign of rot. Stop watering, remove the plant from the pot and check the roots. Healthy roots are firm and light in colour; rotten ones are dark and mushy.
- Black spots on stems: cut away soft or blackened parts with a clean blade, let the cut dry fully, and keep the plant dry until it recovers.
6. Hold off on heavy feeding and pruning
Adenium grows slowly in the rainy season, so heavy fertiliser is not needed. Fresh pruning cuts also stay wet for longer in humid weather. It is usually better to plan major pruning and feeding for the warmer, drier months after the monsoon, when the plant is actively growing again.
After the rains: get ready for flowers
Once the northeast monsoon eases, usually by December, return your adenium to full sun and slowly go back to regular watering as the soil dries out faster. A plant that comes through the monsoon with healthy roots will be ready to put on new growth and flowers as the weather warms up.
