Money Plant Care Guide: How to Grow Golden Pothos Indoors in India

The Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum), also known as Golden Pothos or Devil's Ivy, is India's most popular indoor plant — and for good reason. It is nearly impossible to kill, grows fast, looks beautiful trailing from shelves or climbing a stick, and is believed to bring wealth and good luck according to Vastu Shastra.

Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced plant parent, this guide covers everything you need to know about growing and caring for a money plant indoors in India.

What Is the Money Plant?

The money plant belongs to the Araceae family and is botanically known as Epipremnum aureum. Its common names include Golden Pothos, Devil's Ivy, and Hunter's Robe. In India it is simply called the money plant, owing to its round, coin-shaped leaves and its association with financial prosperity in Vastu Shastra.

Money Plant Vastu Benefits

According to Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui, the money plant is believed to attract positive energy, prosperity, and good fortune when kept indoors. The ideal placement is the south-east corner of the home or office, which is associated with the fire element and financial growth. Avoid placing it in the north-east corner or bedroom entrance according to traditional Vastu guidelines.

Money Plant Care in India

Light

Money plants thrive in low to bright indirect light. They grow well indoors near a window that receives filtered sunlight. Avoid direct harsh sun, which scorches the leaves. In very low light the leaves lose their golden variegation and turn plain green — move it to a brighter spot to restore colour.

Watering

Water every 1–2 weeks, when the top inch of soil feels dry. In India's hot summers, water more frequently; in the monsoon and winter, reduce watering. Overwatering is the most common cause of death — always check the soil before watering. Money plants also grow well in a glass of water; change the water every 1–2 weeks.

Soil

Use well-draining potting mix — a combination of garden soil, cocopeat, and perlite works well. Good drainage prevents root rot, which is the biggest risk in India's humid monsoon season.

Fertiliser

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (March to October). Reduce feeding in winter. Money plants are light feeders and do well without heavy fertilisation.

Temperature

Money plants prefer temperatures between 15°C and 35°C, which covers most of India year-round. They tolerate air-conditioned rooms well, making them ideal for offices and apartments.

Pot and Repotting

Use a pot with drainage holes. Repot once a year or when roots start coming out of the drainage holes. A 4-inch to 6-inch pot is sufficient for a young plant. Our self-watering pots are an excellent choice — they prevent overwatering by releasing water gradually from a reservoir below.

How to Grow Money Plant in Water

Money plants are one of the easiest plants to grow in water. Take a healthy cutting with at least one node, place it in a glass or bottle of water, and keep it in indirect light. Change the water every 1–2 weeks and add a drop of liquid fertiliser once a month. Roots appear within 1–2 weeks.

Common Money Plant Problems

Yellow Leaves

Usually caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Let the soil dry out and ensure the pot has drainage holes.

Brown Leaf Tips

Caused by underwatering, low humidity, or direct sun. Move to indirect light and water more regularly.

Leggy or Pale Growth

Insufficient light. Move to a brighter spot with indirect light.

Is the Money Plant Safe for Pets?

No. Money plants are mildly toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. Keep them out of reach of pets. Refer to the ASPCA toxic plant list for more information.
